A TOUR BY BOAT ON THE DANUBE

Departure from Tekija. The ride lasts 90 minutes.

Trajans Board

Trajan’s Board, the famous Tabula Traiana, was dedicated to the famous Roman emperor Trajan. This board dates back to the years 100 to 103 AD and refers to the wars with the Dacians, during which Emperor Trajan left traces still visible today.

Haiduk mills

This place is located 12 km from Tekia and known to be the oldest permanent settlement dating back to the culture of Lepenski Vir. Apart from a small Roman village, the place is known for the unique remains of medieval silver and Early Byzantine gold coins, which are exhibited in the Archaeological Museum of Derdap in the small town of Kladovo.

Balloon stations Varnica and Pena

The Cauldron, Kazan, is the most challenging part of the Danube River. Before the construction of the dam, this part was extremely dangerous to pass for ships, so it was vital for this part of the river to control the traffic on the river permanently. There were six signals which functioned as traffic lights, which told the captains to wait or to freely pass.

Kazan

The Cauldron, Kazan, received its name by the Turks. In this spot there used to be extremely strong vortexes, which had the effect that it seemed as if the water was boiling. This natural phenomenon is the reason why the Turks named it the Cauldron. This third constriction in the Derdap gorge covers the length of 20 km and the river banks there are very steep slopes, some higher than 500 meters above the water. Here you find very strong vortexes and two caves, Passenger’s Cave and Veterans’ Cave, from which the raging water flows out.

Decebalus

Decebalus was the very last king of the Dacians, who committed suicide when he was surrounded by the Romans. He was a proud and dignified king who didn’t want to fall into the hands of his enemies. In honour of this king, a rock above the Danube River was engraved with Decebalus’s image, which directly opposes Trajan’s board, which is on the Serbian side. So, the two rulers of the past, symbolically face each other for good.

Mrakonia Monastery

The monastery is situated right below the impressive sculpture of Decebalus’s face. It was built on top of the ruins of a church from the 15th century. According to some legends, the name Mrakonia means ‘dark place’ or ‘hidden water’. The rock, on which the monastery was built, was named ‘the bubble’. It used to be an important watchtower and lighthouse, which guided ships safely around the steep and dangerous cliffs. At this very spot the Danube River is 93 meters deep and so it is the deepest point along the course of the river.
